Today’s class is asynchronous. Please do the following:

1. Complete a rhetorical situation worksheet ( Google Doc ) for Amy Tan, Safwat Saleem, or Gloria Anzaldúa. It’s OK if you’re unsure about the answers; try your best, we will go over this in class.

2. At the top of the page, write a rhetorical précis lite for the author you referenced in the rhetorical situation worksheet (so, if you do a rhetorical situation worksheet on Amy Tan’s “Mother Tongue,” then write a rhetorical précis for Amy Tan). Put this text at the top of the rhetorical situation worksheet.

Remember:

the Rhetorical Précis (lite) is….

1. the name of the author
2. a phrase describing the author’s credentials (or identifiers)
3. the type and title of work, the date of work (inserted in parentheses)
4. a specific and accurate verb (such as “assert,” “argue,” “suggest,” “imply,” “claim,” “posit,” etc.) that describes what the author is doing in the text. This Charting worksheet has so many great examples of these verbs. 
5. a THAT clause in which you state the major meaning of the author’s text.

Remember, you can also just fill in this form: (Author’s first and last name), (author’s credentials [note, this can go before author’s name]), in his/her (type of text), (title of text), published in (publishing info), VERB (addresses, investigates, explores) the topic of (topic of text) and VERB (argues, posits, declares) that (argument/main message).
