DUE: 500-word summary of the work you will analyze for your rhetorical analysis essay. Bring 4 hard copies to class!

Today, we will peer review our works in person and on paper. We will also review thesis statement tips & discuss what makes a strong thesis statement.

You will use the following self- and peer-review worksheet to check your work and offer suggestions for revising the summary.

Peer review summaries

Choose a partner to read your summary. While they read your summary, you will also read your summary. Both partners will review the first summary using this checklist

Once you have both completed the checklist, review the answers together. Let your partner know where you feel you could have done better, and have your partner share their answers with you. Brainstorm revisions you might complete.

When you’ve completed the review of one piece, move to the second piece. Complete these steps again for your partner’s piece. Again, help the partner brainstorm revisions they might make to their work and offer suggestions.

Once you have both had a chance to give and receive a review, take the rest of the time to work on your summary. The summary will become the basis for your rhetorical analysis essay.

TIP: Consider using this rhetorical précis template if you need to adjust the text. This is not necessary to use, but will help you as you meet each part of the rhetorical analysis.

Thesis statement tips

How do you arrive at a thesis? This handout ( PDF | Google Docs ) and this slideshow ( Google Slides ) will provide some guidance.

To do Monday by 8am

1. Complete the “Rhetorical Analysis Worksheet” for the course text you intend to analyze for your essay ( Word | Google Docs ) (Note: there will be some overlap between the rhetorical situation and analysis worksheets).
2. If you haven’t already, complete a “charting” worksheet ( Word | Google Docs ) for the text you’re going to be analyzing.

Email both of these documents to your instructor.

Monday’s tasks:

Using “charting” worksheet, summary, and rhetorical analysis and situation worksheets, write the first draft of your rhetorical analysis essay, due by Sunday, October 24 at 11:59pm.
